This is what the best engineers practice
Why focus, not hustle - is the real force multiplier
I only care about two things in my career: learning and shipping real value. That’s it. I’ll handle the noise when needed, but it doesn’t get my focus.
And honestly, that kind of focus is rare. I’ve watched a lot of projects flop quietly while others crush it. It’s not about who's working the most hours, it’s about who’s intentional. Here’s what the top folks consistently do:
1) They don’t say yes to everything
They don’t just take every ticket. They ask: “Is this worth my time?” They push back when needed, even on product decisions. Especially in big companies, half the roadmap is redundant or disconnected.
Great engineers dig deeper. They ask questions, follow the data, and care whether the work drives actual business value. Clean code doesn’t mean anything if the project doesn’t matter.
2) They stay focused
There’s always friction: broken VPNs, busted CI, expired certs, flaky local setups. That stuff’s real, but it’s not the real work. Good engineers treat it like a speed bump, not a destination. They solve the issue, escalate it if needed, and keep going.
They’re selective about deep dives. Not every weird edge case needs 5 hours of debugging. They ask, “Does this need me?” If not, they move on.
3) They close the loop
Impact doesn’t stop at code. The best engineers make sure things actually ship and don’t cause chaos on the way. They respect teammates, PMs, QAs, whoever.
They don’t dump messy specs or hand off half-baked ideas. They write clear docs, follow through on what they ship, and tie up loose ends. A forgotten config or silent DB change now = hours of pain later. They know better.
The highest performers are not flashy. They just don’t let problems pile up.
They keep things smooth. Not just for themselves, but for the whole team.
That’s what creates the space to actually build something great.

If you’re the kind of engineer who doesn’t just want to get better at code, but better at everything around it - welcome. You’ll fit right in.
This was an insightful read.
My takeaways—impactful engineers:
1. They are continuously asking questions and are oriented towards the product.
2. Remain focused on the problem they intend to solve.
3. They are mindful of other people's time.
